LTSA Student Wiki
Students started the year with various learning experiences to practice teamwork, leadership skills, and developing a growth mindset. We have explored the ideas of equity vs equality, as well as empathy, including the graphic novel, New Kid, read by 4th-7th grade students.
During this initial unit several students began to share “how-to” videos or helpful links on different subject area Google Classroom feeds. However, it wasn’t easy for students in different classes to easily access those resources. So, students were challenged to create a central location where all students could collaborate and contribute information that they wanted to share with other LTSA students. They were asked to think critically about information that might be helpful for students new to our school, as well as content that current students would be interested in.
Students used Google Sites to create an LTSA Student Wiki. To manage the many individual and collaborative tasks involved, students learned to use Trello as an online interactive task board. Students assumed different team roles to facilitate the project. For this project some students were individual contributors of specific content areas and other students organized themselves into groups to work on pages that reflected shared interests.
Throughout the project, students had opportunities to practice several twenty-first century skills including: critical thinking, communication, creativity, collaboration, perseverance, growth mindset, leadership, conflict resolution, time-management, and reflection.
